Yaesu FT5D

The Yaesu FT5D is a highly regarded handheld transceiver (also known as a “handi-talkie”) that is often considered to be the best in its class. There are several reasons why the FT5D stands out as the top choice for many amateur radio operators.

One of the standout features of the FT5D is its APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) capabilities. The APRS system allows users to send and receive real-time text messages, GPS coordinates, and other data over the airwaves. This is especially useful for emergency situations or for coordinating with other operators in the field. The FT5D’s APRS capabilities are top-notch, making it a reliable choice for those who rely on this feature. I’d go as far as saying Yaesu makes the only full featured APRS handi talkies that I’ve found on the market. They are an absolute blast to use and APRS does much more than simply report locations.

In addition to its APRS capabilities, the FT5D is also known for its exceptional build quality and durability. The transceiver is constructed from rugged materials that can withstand the rigors of field operation, ensuring it will last for many years to come. The FT5D’s casing is also water-resistant, making it a great choice for outdoor use in inclement weather.

In comparison to its competitors, the FT5D consistently receives high marks for its audio quality. Many operators have noted that the transceiver’s audio is significantly clearer and more robust than other handi-talkies on the market. This is especially important for those who rely on their transceiver for critical communications in a variety of settings. I’ve found it to be better than ICOM and while I tend to use ICOM everything I always take my FT5D for anything mission critical.

The FT5D also includes a variety of convenient features, such as an excellent touch LCD display that make it a user-friendly choice for any operator. While it’s not my favourite menu system I do find it to be logical enough. This is in my opinion the preeminent choice closely followed by ICOM, the only reason I would suggest ICOM over this would be if you needed D-Star for some reason.

Overall, it’s easy to see why the Yaesu FT5D is considered amongst the best handi-talkies on the market. Its combination of APRS capabilities, exceptional build quality, durability, versatility, and convenient features make it a top choice for any serious amateur radio operator. If you are in the market for a new handi-talkie, the Yaesu FT5D is definitely worth considering.
